What does stair flooring involve?

Stair flooring means covering each step's tread (the part you walk on) and riser (the front face) with new flooring, then finishing the front edge with a stair nose.

Stairs take more cutting and fitting than any other part of a floor job. Every step is a little different. Small mistakes show, so this is where being detailed matters most.

Our installation process

  1. Look at the stairs

At your estimate we check the stair structure and talk about the look you want.

  2. Remove old covering

Carpet, tack strips and old nosings come off, and the steps are cleaned up.

  3. Fit each step

Treads and risers are measured and cut for each step, one at a time.

  4. Install nosings

Stair noses finish the front edge of each step for a clean, safe edge.

  5. Walkthrough

We check every step with you before we call it done.

We don’t leave a job site until it’s perfect. If anything is wrong with our installation, we come back and make it right.

Stair flooring questions

Can you put vinyl plank on stairs?

Yes. Vinyl plank is one of the most common stair upgrades, with stair nosing to finish each step. See the photo on this page.

Can my stairs match my new floor?

That's the goal. We use the same flooring or a matching product so it all flows together.

Do you take out the old stair carpet?

Yes. Removing old carpet and other flooring is part of the job.

Are hard-surface stairs slippery?

They can be more slippery than carpet. Stair nosings help, and some people add runners. Ask us at your estimate.
